I got a new spider viv two days ago. i cleaned it out before putting Ripley in it but after a while i noticed a couple of really light brown almost cream coloured ants. i thjought id got them out so after a day i moved the spider viv onto the top of my cham viv. now there are quite a few in my Cham viv. what are they and how do i get rid of them? the spider viv came from a fish place and was ex display.

Are you sure they are ants? They are more likely little scavenger bugs which are very small and light brown coloured. They are quite common and are usually in bark or some substrates. They are harmless to you and your reptiles just a pest. They are tricky to get rid of all of them even after a good clean out some still manage to escape.

Not sure if they are ants, they look a bit like our normal ants just very light in colour. we have given the Cham viv a good clean and havent seen anymore but i have noticed 2 in the spider viv. as long as they wont do any harm to my babie i wont worry so much about it. thank you x

They sound like those pesky scavengers so your baby should be fine. Any that look red/black could be mites and would be more of a problem for your reptile so always keep an eye open for those.

Well the ones I have are pretty easy to squash, not that I like doing it but man they get every where. I mainly get them in my crestie vivs and I think they must come from the eco earth that I use for them. But I found some in with my african grey the other week and I was not happy. Had the cage out at the weekend for a complete clean so I hope that got rid of the little b*ggers.

Are the ones you both have able to jump? Mine are. I'm just wondering if they are different.

They only really jump when you try to flush them down a sink lol. They kind of do a flea type bounce and don't jump very high.

As you say pics won't help as they are too small biggrin.gif .
